Defensive Handgun Course Part 2 - Range
This is Part 2 of a 3 part class that is a live fire class that deals with the use of a pistol in a defensive situation. This is a skills class is based on the actions after you have decided to use a pistol in defensive situation. This course is a continuation of our Defensive Handgun - Part 1 which is a mindset and decision making class. It is required to take the part 1 portion first as the skills form part 1 will then play in to making the decision to deploy your firearm translate is to the actions needed on the range in the Range Course. We do conduct them separately, for those who want to practice in-between or attend more that once.
There are a series of fundamentals to operating any firearm. In a the Pistol Operation class you learn the basic aspects about the firearm, safe handling, loading and unloading, using the sights and the trigger to put lead on the target. In an operation class you learn about the firearm and how to use it but in a defensive class you learn about yourself and how you operate the firearm under stress. Many people think if you are good at hitting targets at the range you will be good at hitting the threat in a self-defense situation. Adrenaline in your body shorts circuits your marksmanship and motor skills and if basic marksmanship is your only training you have it can fail you in a defensive situation.
This class requires basic training, you must be familiar with basic operation of your pistol(several range session 1000+ rounds with your pistol), comfortable holstering. See our Firearms 101 or Pistol Operation courses if you need a review on this.
This is a defensive course that puts your fundamentals under stress. We start with a safety review, use of force and equipment check. We will review the fundamentals and enhance your magazine changes follow though and ability to work thought malfunctions. Qualify course of fire, DEA dot drill, draw drill, kneeling, back, prone, sul, high ready and compress ready drills. Then add to that stress, need to move, navigate obstacles, engage multiple targets, or even operate in the dark. This course focuses on real life situations. A person’s skill level simply relates to how well they can transition from fundamental to fundamental to produce the desired result in the conditions they find themselves. No matter your current skill level, this course will help you to progress and make your personal practice more effective. "Having taken the Defensive Handgun Classroom Course I was definitely looking forward to taking this next course in the series. It absolutely did not disappoint. The course starts off with some basic review and the chance for asking questions of the instructors, then it is right onto the Range. After the first preliminary round of firing "just to see where we all were coming from" the actual instruction began and continued through the remainder of the day. To say you do a LOT of shooting is an understatement and you most definitely will get a great feel for your firearm and your level of proficiency, or lack thereof, by the end of the day. The instructors are with you every step of the way, and they are stringent to a high degree on safety being maintained throughout the day, which is tremendously important. I feel the most important part of the day long training is the fact that we all are put through various scenarios that we would basically NEVER be able to experience in a standard Range setting and also the ability to utilize live fire in positions that you most definitely could never utilize on a regular Range day. It was most definitely an eye-opening experience for many of us that may have felt at the beginning of a scenario that "this will be easy" until you actually try and complete the scenario and see you actually missed every shot!!! Definitely a humbling experience for some of us. I give my highest recommendation for this course to anyone that really wants to "test themselves" and to gain tremendously valuable experience and knowledge in the handling and use of handguns from two of the absolute best instructors I have had the pleasure of learning from. You will be tremendously glad you took advantage of this training opportunity." David K
I am new to shooting and I have recently taken two live fire classes from Iron sight: Pistol Operation and Defensive Handgun. Both were outstanding. The instructors were knowledgeable, engaging and even entertaining. The Defensive Pistol class was awesome. They created scenarios that you could never replicate on your own or at a range. Even down time was filled with interesting and relevant conversations. As a novice shooter I found the environment welcoming and not at all intimidating. Safety was a focal point and never compromised. Now I am looking forward to taking more advanced classes!" -Joe D

Saying the Defensive Handgun course was great does not do it justice. The class size was perfect, it gave everyone ample opportunity for 1:1 attention. I learned many new drills to bring to the range while practicing to make the most of my time. The use of cover drills showed me how to safely operate and the addition of stress during the drills showed how important proper practice is needed. You make everybody in attendance feel safe and comfortable and I think that is important to be able to get the most out of what you guys have to offer. The most important thing I came away with is the understanding that I need to continue to train to be a safe, responsible everyday carrier. That being said, see you soon for more training. - Kurt U
I had a lot of fun at the defensive handgun range class. I was my first formal training other than when I qualify for work. I liked the pace of class and the instruction. I also really enjoyed the "active shooter" set up. I liked the drill where you had to keep the attacker away while your gun was being stage down range with a problem. The grip advise helped me keep my rounds from the lower left of the target. Also not anticipating the recoil helped keep my rounds from going low. It was a good class and I look forward to taking defensive pistol 2 after I complete the concealed carry class. – Rich B
"This was the best one yet. I realized a mechanical safety is not always the best option on a fire arm when trying to draw and shoot on command, I do not disagreed with them , for me this was a problem. Second a shorter more confined flashlight is easier to handle with a firearm. There was never a dull moment during the class. I would like to take it again possibly with my everyday carry holster and a,different firearm. This class opened up my eyes to things that I never really thought about. You guys are top notch. Keep up the good work. See you again." - Chris H
I would like to thank you guys for the training that you provide. I thought the class was very educational and fun at the same time. I wasn't sure what to expect when I signed up but I was not disappointed. The fact that the first thing you did was take us right out to the range was incredible, in my mind I thought we would be sitting in a class for at least the first hour, boy was I wrong! The scenarios you ran us through were fantastic and about as close to real life as possible. I thought the dummy round drills were great training as I have never had to deal with that scenario before and now I know I could handle it. I thought the flashlight training was very educational as I had never shot in the dark with a light before and I realized it is much more difficult than I thought it would be. You guys did a great job teaching the different techniques. The class gave us students a chance to do and experience real life situations that we could never experience just going to a range and I feel my skills have improved if I should ever have to defend myself or loved ones. Thank you again for helping to advance my skills and knowledge. - Joe K
I thought the course was well done and very educational. The back and forth from the range to the classroom kept the interest peaked. Very good job of managing the safety of a group of shooters while keeping the shooting pertinent to real life situations. The speed in which a Glock 19 was produced when the front sight of my Glock 26 loosened was impressive. - Greg S
"To start with I think you guys do a great job squeezing as much as you do into such a short period of time. You touch on a little bit of everything . Addressing speed accuracy. situational awareness . The amount of live fire in this last class was really needed on my end. I'm currently working on grip. Looking at my self, thinking in regards to the live fire section I need to improve on my grip technique.
I really don't think you could add much more into this class and their isn't really anything not worthy that you have already included. I don't feel their is any one perfect gun or holster I think sharing the information with other class mates is important, as you do in the beginning of the class. Was nice hearing from others on their choice and their preferences. I also like how you encourage and share some other peoples web sites and channels as learning tools.
I also thought the use of the drag race exercise was excellent training aid. concentrating more on getting on target than actual pinpoint accuracy I felt is an important concept. You guys I thought did a great job doing what you could to desecrating us before the actual moment.
Well with all that being said I have taken several of your classes so far and you can count on me taking more in the future." Robert A
"I never get to fire from some of these positions at my range but these are all valid real life situations." Joe
"This was my first live fire training class. It was great. Drawing on command and re-holstering was really good given that this is not usually practiced. I think that the drills of drawing and firing on command with changing targets was especially helpful as you don't get this kind of practice alone at the range. Also, shooting in diminished lighting was quite an experience. I would strongly encourage anyone considering concealed carry of a pistol to take a course like this. I am looking forward to taking more classes with you guys." - Patrick
